Nanooks Net 2-2 Tie, Shootout Win At LSSU

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Alaska Nanooks earned two key points in the Central Collegaite Hockey Association standings Friday night with a 2-2 (OT) tie and a shootout win over the Lake Superior State Lakers at Taffy Abel Ice Arena.

Senior center Derek Klassen and junior defenseman Joe Sova lit the lamp in regulation and junior goalie Scott Greenham made 24 saves to preserve the 2-2 tie. Neither team would score in the extra session but Alaska freshman Colton Beck and senior captain Kevin Petovello tickled the twine in the shootout and Greenham turned aside the only two shots he faced to lift the Blue and Gold to victory and a second point on the night.

Alaska (12-12-5, 9-11-5-3 CCHA) held onto sixth place, while the Lakers (9-12-8, 7-9-7-4 CCHA) remained in seventh. LSSU is tied with Northern Michigan.

The Nanooks took a 1-0 lead just over the 10-minute mark of the first period with a goal from Klassen. Sophomore Chad Gehon assisted on the tally. At 9:15 of the second period, Alaska took a 2-0 lead with Sova's marker, assisted by Gehon and Klassen.

LSSU freshman defenseman Andrew Perrault cut Alaska's lead in half just 40 seconds later, when he took a shot from the point off a faceoff that beat Greenham. At 2:39 of the third period, the Lakers' Chad Nehring struck for the game-tying goal.

After a scoreless five-minute sudden-death overtime, which included power plays for both teams, Beck and Petovello made good on their chances, while Greenham stopped shots by LSSU's Rick Schofield and Domenic Monardo.

The teams meet again on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. as Alaska looks to clinch a victory in its final road game of the regular season.
