Box Score FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Four players scored in double figures for tenth-ranked Alaska Anchorage and it used stout defense to cruise past Alaska 78-29 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball opener for both teams.
The Seawolves (5-2, 1-0 GNAC) were led by Hanna Johansson, who posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Haley Holmstead contributed 13 points in the starting role, while Alysa Horn and Tijera Mathews tallied 12 and 11 points, respectively. Kaylie Robison also had seven points to go with her nine boards.
UAA shot 36.7-percent (29-79 FG) from the floor and limited Alaska to a season-low 14.6-percent (7-48 FG) shooting. It dominated on the boards 59-37, including a 25-9 margin on the offensive glass. Anchorage also forced 28 Nanook turnovers, while committing 17.
For the Nanooks (3-6, 0-1 GNAC) junior forward
Jacqueline Lovato (Gunnison, Colo./McCook CC) led the team with eight points and four rebounds. Four other Alaska players had four rebounds each.
Leading 11-10 in the first, UAA scored seven in a row to hold an 18-10 advantage with 11:09 to play. Alaska cut the lead back to 18-12 with 10:26 remaining, but the Seawolves proceeded to shut down UAF's offense, holding it scoreless for the next 9:57 and tallied the game's next 20 points. UAA led 38-14 at the break.
Alaska's shooting woes continued as it was held with a made field goal for the opening 6:03 of the second. The Seawolves continued their pressure and built a lead as high as 54 points on two separate occasions.
The Nanooks return to action next weekend when they head down to Anchorage for the AT&T Hoops Classic. First, the 'Nooks take on the Academy of Art on Friday 5 p.m., followed by a Saturday game with Hawaii-Hilo at 3 p.m.
