FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Max Cook scored the go-ahead goal 8:32 into the third period and Miami (OH) held off Alaska for a 2-1 CCHA men's ice hockey victory on Saturday night at the Carlson Center.
The RedHawks improved 4-6-0 on the season and 2-4-0-0 in conference after sweeping the two-game set with a pair of 2-1 wins, while the Nanooks fell to 3-5-2 overall and 0-4-2-0 in the CCHA.
Despite outshooting the visitors 25-23 on net, the Nanooks managed just a single goal as netminder Cody Reichard registered 24 saves for Miami. Senior goalkeeper
Scott Greenham (Addison, Ontario/Oakville) made 21 stops for Alaska on 23 shots faced in the defeat.
After a scoreless first, Miami got on the score sheet at the 6:25 mark of the second period with a goal by Curtis McKenzie on the power play. Assists were credited to Steven Spinell and Tyler Biggs on the tally.
It looked as if the RedHawks would take that lead into the locker room, until the Nanooks tied it up 7.4 seconds to go. With time running out, Alaska brought it up in the attacking zone and senior
Scott Enders (Edmonton, Alberta/Lloydminster) fired a shot that was saved by Reichard, but junior
Nik Yaremchuk (St. Albert, Alberta/Sherwood Park) picked up the loose puck and his backhander off the rebound got past Reichard.
The RedHawks regained the lead 8:32 into the third period when Jimmy Mullin, working behind the net, found Cook out in front and he fired it past Greenham for a 2-1 advantage.
The Nanooks had the extra attacker with over a minute remaining, but time ran out before they could score an equalizer.
Miami went 1-for-5 on the power play, while Alaska failed to score on its five man-up opportunities.
