FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Sophomore
Anna Hjelmevoll continued a strong weekend of shooting but it wasn't enough as the visiting Kentucky Wildcats turned in a solid team effort and beat their hosts 4691-4646 on Sunday afternoon at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range.
"I really thought they would step up today and do well, but it didn't happen," said head coach
Dan Jordan. "They shot well leading up to the weekend and Thursday was a good start. Anna shot outstanding all weekend and
Ryan Anderson is really stepping up as a freshman."
Hjelmevoll shot for team-highs of 580 (including a 197 standing) in smallbore and 591 in air rifle, but Kentucky got match highs of 585 in smallbore from Henri Junghanel, who was a perfect 200 through 20 prone shots, and 593 from Ethan Settlemires.
UK outdid the Blue and Gold 2330-2301 in smallbore and 2361-2345 in air rifle.
Alaska's smallbore contingent included Anderson (579), junior
Cole Bures (572), and sophomores
Scott Franz (570) and
Julia Redzia (567).
In air gun, rookie
Mats Eriksson was second among Nanook shooters with a 586, followed by Anderson's 585. Bures and Redzia tied in the final scoring slot with 583 apiece.
"I'm really hoping that they start seeing the urgency in what they are doing and find some competitiveness within themselves to start fighting to do it better," Jordan said. "We have the talent, they just need to find the drive."
The Nanooks have almost a two-month break until their next competition, as they visit the Citadel on Jan. 17, 2012 for their next match.
