FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Senior goalie
Scott Greenham made 25 saves to record his ninth career shutout and backstop the Alaska Nanooks men's hockey team to their first CCHA win of the year with a 2-0 victory over the No. 6 Ferris State Bulldogs on Saturday night at the Carlson Center.
Senior winger
Carlo Finucci tallied a goal and an assist and sophomore
Colton Beck scored the game-winner as Alaska improved to 4-7-2 on the year and 1-6-2-0 in league play. The win snapped Alaska's eight-game winless skid, four-game losing streak and lifted it out of the CCHA cellar and into 10th place in the conference standings.
Sophomore forward
Colton Beck opened the scoring at 14:17 of the first period with his fifth marker of the year, which stood as the game-winner. Finucci and sophomore
Cody Kunyk assisted on the play.
Both teams exchanged man-advantage opportunities in the second period but 20 minutes was not enough time for either team to find the back of the opposing team's net. Alaska outshot their guests 7-6 in the middle frame for a 17-14 advantage through the first 40 minutes.
Finucci doubled the home team's lead with his fifth goal of the year at 6:26 of the final frame after taking a feed from junior
Nik Yaremchuk and walking into the zone between the circles and firing a wrist shot that beat FSU's Taylor Nelson to make it 2-0. The Bulldogs turned up the pressure and outshot the Nanooks 11-6, but they could not solve Greenham and the Nanooks held on for the win.
Alaska meets the sixth-ranked Bulldogs for the second game of the weekend on Saturday night at 7:35 p.m. AKsT.
