FORT WORTH, Texas - Alaska notched its best team score of the season but a perfect 600 shot by Texas Christian University's Sarah Scherer in air rifle topped an all-around performance by the host Horned Frogs, who beat the Nanooks 4690-4655 Tuesday afternoon.
Scherer perfect score marked the fourth time a 600 was fired in NCAA competition. Alaska alumnus Matt Rawlings fired the first 600 in NCAA competition on Dec. 2, 2005. West Virginia's Nicco Compriani shot a 600 in 2010 and on Oct. 22, 2011, West Virginia's Petra Zublasing fired the third 600.
The Nanooks were outshot 2362-2328 in air rifle. For the Blue and Gold, freshman
Ryan Anderson had the top score with a 589, good for second (tied TCU's Sarah Beard) overall.
Julia Redzia (585),
Anna Hjelmevoll (584) and
Mats Eriksson (582) finished 6-7-8 and
Scott Franz was 10th with a 579.
Mike Liuzza and
Cole Bures finished with 578 apiece, good for 12th and 13th, respectively.
Although they fell 2336-2319 in smallbore, it proved a strong point for the Nanooks. Two shooters, Redzia (588) and Hjelmevoll (585), shot personal bests and set new standards for the team. Alaska's Franz (577), Eriksson (576), Anderson (574) and Liuzza (572) finished 7th through 10th and Bures finished 13th with a 563.
"The change in attitude has been amazing over the last two matches," said head coach
Dan Jordan. "The team has set some new expectations for the year and I think they will only continue to improve. "
Alaska returns home to train for their first home matches of the season against Air Force (Nov. 18) and Kentucky (Nov. 20).
