Hockey Takes Down Clarkson 3-1 For First Win Of The Season

Box Score ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Sophomore left wing Colton Beck had a goal and an assist and was named the Kendall Player of the Game for his role in the Alaska Nanooks 3-1 triumph over the Clarkson Golden Knights Saturday evening at the Sullivan Arena. It was the Nanooks first win of the season and gave them a 1-1 record and third place in the tournament standings, while Beck garnered a spot on the Classic's All-Tournament team.

Junior Andy Taranto opened the scoring in the first period when he redirected a shot fired by Beck from the left face-off dot. Beck's shot initally hit a Clarkson defenseman's stick that was laid on the ice to block a centering feed and Taranto found the puck mid-air and tapped it past CU's goalie Paul Karpowich at 15:29.

The Golden Knight's Nick Tremblay netted the equalizer at 9:42 of the second period while skating with an extra-attacker during a delayed penalty to Alaska's Ron Meyers. Tremblay converted feeds from Ben Sexton and Allan McPherson to tie the game at 1-1. The Nanooks killed off Meyer's penalty and got a chance to regain the lead when Nik Pokulok was whistled for high-sticking later in the middle frame, but Karpowich and CU's defense thwarted their best efforts.

It wasn't until the middle of the final frame that Alaska's power-play clicked (on their fifth chance of the game), when Nik Yaremchuk notched the game-winning goal at 11:24. Senior defenseman Scott Enders and sophomore Cody Kunyk were credited with assists in the score.

Beck capped the scoring with less than a minute to play, when he and Taranto converted an odd-man rush into an insurance goal at 19:08.

Alaska's goalie Scott Greenham notched his first win of the year in his 79th consecutive apperance for the Nanooks with a 21-save effort. Karpowich moved to 0-1-1 on the year with a solid 32-save outing.

The Nanooks finished the contest 1-for-6 on the power play and 4-of-5 on the penalty kill.

Next up for the Blue and Gold is their home tournament, the Brice Alaska Goal Rush, to be held next weekend in Fairbanks at the Carlson Center. Alaska Anchorage, who beat SCSU 5-4 in overtime Saturday night en route to the Kendall Classic Championship Title, will open tournament play at 5:05 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14 against Nebraska-Omaha followed by Alaska's game against Mercyhurst at 8:05 p.m.
