OXFORD, Miss.,
 - The No. 4 Alaska rifle team won air rifle but lost in smallbore as No. 8 Ole Miss captured a narrow 4,648-4,645 victory in the season opener Wednesday at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center.

The Rebels took a five-point decision (2,301-2,296) in smallbore, but the Nanooks won in air rifle (2,349-2,347). Ole Miss' senior Keely Stankey led the way for the home team with individual wins in both competitions with scores of 581 in smallbore and 594 in air rifle.

Alaska was led by junior Cole Bures (Odell, Neb.) and sophomore Michael Liuzza (New Orleans, La.). Bures tallied 590 points in air rifle and 576 in smallbore, while Liuzza had 588 and 577, respectively.

Second-year shooter Anna Hjelmevoll shot the third highest mark for Alaska in the air gun with a 587, followed by Mats Eriksson and Julia Redzia with 586 apiece and rookie Ryan Anderson rounded out the Blue and Gold's scores with a 577.

"I'm really happy with how air gun went," Head Coach Dan Jordan said. "They have been working on that because we have struggled so much the last couple of years. I think that might be one of the highest air scores we have had in two or three years."

Redzia (572), Anderson (571), Hjelmevoll and Eriksson (568) followed Liuzza and Bures in the smallbore score rankings.

"Smallbore was a little bit of a struggle, but there are a lot of bright spots and I'm sure we will be doing better in short order," Jordan said. "The most important thing is that the team dynamic is so much better than last year. Everyone is getting along, supporting each other, and they seem like a team that wants to do well."

The Nanooks return to action Friday with a match at Tennessee-Martin in Martin, Tenn.
