Rifle Drops Road Match At UTEP

EL PASO, Texas - The Alaska Nanooks rifle team got off to a slow start on their three-match road trip, opening with a third-place finish against the University of Texas El Paso Miners and the Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday at the UTEP Rifle Range.

The Nanooks finished with an aggregate of 4619, while the Miners shot a school record of 4671 as the match champions and Nevada scored 4648 for second on the day.

In smallbore, Alaska's shooters combined for a team score of 2295, led by freshman Ryan Anderson's 576. UTEP fired a 2316 behind a match-high 583 from Andrea Palafox and Nevada scored 2303.

Julia Redzia and Cole Bures tied for second with 574 while Mike Liuzza and Anna Hjelmevoll shot 571 and 567, respectively. Sophomore Scott Franz (572) and rookie Mats Eriksson (565) rounded out the participating Nanooks.

Alaska's Anna Hjelmevoll shot the second best air rifle score on the day with a 591, but was not a part of the Nanooks' starting team. The Blue and Gold finished the day with an air gun score of 2324, following the Miners' 2355 and the Wolf Pack's 2345.

Redzia led the scoring Nanooks with a 585, followed by Anderson's 586, Liuzza's 579, Bures' 576 and Franz's 573.  Eriksson shot for a 583 as an individual.

All three teams will shoot a rematch on Sunday Oct. 30 begining at 8 a.m. at the UTEP Rifle Range.
