FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Redshirt senior center
Nicole Bozek recorded a double-double with game-highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead Blue past Gold 57-28 in Alaska's annual intrasquad women's basketball scrimmage Friday evening at the Patty Center.
“Players were hitting wide-open shots, which was nice,” head coach
Cody Burgess said. “The blue team executed a bit better than the gold team. The gold team didn't hit as many shots, but towards the end they got some steals which was good. We're going to get better and we're learning and I like the effort, especially out of the upperclassmen.”
Blue built a comfortable 29-10 halftime lead and never looked back, outscoring Gold 28-18 in the second frame.
Along with Bozek, senior guard
Jeni Gabriel chipped in 12 points and tied a game-high four assists, while junior forward
Jacqueline Lovato contributed 10 points in the win. Junior center
Staci Carter also played well in the post, falling one point and one rebound shy of a double-double with nine in both categories.
For Gold, senior forward
Autumn Greene had a team-high seven points, while junior
Taylor Altenburg and sophomore
Emily Johnson each scored six points. Altenburg also posted four rebounds and Johnson had three assists.
“It was great to see people come out and watch us, especially for the scrimmage,” Burgess said. “I think people are anxious to see the new faces in the program and new style, so it definitely helps us get the sweat off and little nerves out and take a step forward when we play Friday, the 11th (of November).”
The women's basketball season officially gets underway Nov. 11 when the Nanooks play host to Dixie State (N.D.) at 5:30 p.m. at the Patty Center.
NOTE: The women's basketball team played two 20-minute halves with a running clock.
