Hockey Ties Ohio State 2-2, Falls 2-1 In Shootout

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Forwards Jarret Granberg and Justin Filzen lit the lamp for the Alaska Nanooks but the Ohio State Buckeyes rallied to lock the game 2-2 in the third period and prevailed in the shootout, 2-1 Thursday night at Value City Arena.

The tie and shootout loss were the second consecutive for the Nanooks, who move to 3-2-2 on the season and winless (0-1-2-0) in CCHA play.

After 40 minutes of scoreless action, the Buckeyes opened the scoring just 38 seconds into the third period. OSU's Alex Carlson made it 1-0 when took a pass from Curtis Gedig and fired a wrist shot that beat Alaska's goalie Scott Greenham low stickside.

The Nanooks took the lead with two goals in a span of 67 seconds, getting goals off the sticks of junior Jarret Granberg and senior Justin Filzen, at 8:02 and 9:09, respectively.

Granberg made good on Alaska's fourth man-advantage of the contest, taking a feed senior defenseman Aaron Gens sent tape-to-tape from the right point to the left faceoff circle, where he walked it to the slot and send a back-handed shot just over OSU's Cal Heeter left shoulder to make it 1-0.

Filzen gave Alaska the lead tapping in a rebound attempt from senior captain Ron Meyers on the doorstep. Meyers collected junior Chad Gehon's blocked shot from the top of the left faceoff circle just to the left of the crease. He skated from left to right attempting to backhand it past Heeter but his attempt was thwarted but left unattended until Filzen poked the lose puck past the scrambling netminder.

Buckeye defenseman Ben Gallacher sent a shot from the point through traffic at 11:13 that beat a screened Greenham to deadlock the score at two-all.Neither team could add to its goal total through the rest of the third period and overtime, sending the contest to a shootout.

In the shootout, Alaska's Colton Beck made good on his attempt but OSU's Tanner Fritz and Chris Crane scored and Heeter denied Granberg and junior Andy Taranto on their attempts to secure the shootout win and  extra point in the CCHA standings.

For the game, the Nanooks outshout their hosts 36-22, including 18-4 in the final frame, and went 1-for-6 with the man advantage and 3-of-4 on the penalty kill.

Alaska's senior goalie Scott Greenham 20 saves, while OSU's Cal Heeter had 34 at the other end.

The teams meet on Friday at 3:05 p.m. AKDT for the series finale.
