FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Alaska hockey team jumped out to a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes, but a three-goal second period by No. 11 Western Michigan led to a 4-1 defeat in the Nanooks' CCHA opener Friday night at the Carlson Center.
Junior center
Jarret Granberg opened the scoring with a power-play tally at 12:33 of the first period. Yaremchuk chased a puck deep against the boards below the Bronco's goal line, where Finucci picked it up and snuck it past a WMU defenseman on the boards and then fed the puck to Granberg in the slot where he wristed the puck past goalie Nick Pisellini to make it 1-0.
Alaska's only lead of the game was wiped away early in the second period, when WMU erupted offensively and put the game out of reach for the Nanooks. Ben Warda scored the equalizer at 1:59 of the second stanza, while Derek Roehl netted the game-winner at 7:13 and Will Kessel gave the Broncos a two-goal margin at 10:40.
A pair of WMU penalties at the start of the final frame gave the Nanooks their chance to get back in the game, but the Broncos and Pisellini thwarted their attacks. A checking from behind major and game misconduct to freshman defenseman
Trevor Campbell at 6:03, set WMU up for their fourth strike of the game. The power-play marker was scored by David Killip at 8:58 of the third period to make it 4-1.
For the evening, Alaska was 1-for-7 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill. Greenham made 30 saves in the loss and Pisellini had 26.
The two will hit the ice tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. in the series finale.
