Scott Greenham turned aside 36 Western Michigan shots as the No. 16 Alaska Nanooks tied their guests 2-2 in overtime Friday night. The Broncos prevailed 1-0 in the shootout for the extra point in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings.
With the tie, the Nanooks (9-6-4, 6-5-4-2 CCHA) move into fifth place in the league standings and with a two-point night the Broncos (10-6-5, 4-5-4-3 CCHA) take sole possession of 8th place.
After a scoreless first period, the Nanooks got the scoring started at 9:52 of the second period. While skating with a man-advantage Taranto finished a shot from the point by junior defenseman
Aaron Gens to make it 1-0. Junior defenseman
Joe Sova assisted on the tally.
Alaska's lead was short-lived, however, as WMU's Greg Squires answered back for the visitors less than two minutes later with an even-strength marker at 11:35.
Finucci gave the Blue and Gold their second advantage of the contest at 13:14, when he beat WMU's Jerry Kuhn over his right shoulder from the left face-off circle to make good on a cross-ice feed from sophomore
Jarret Granberg. Taranto was in on the scoring after chipping the puck out of Alaska's zone to Granberg to set the play in motion.
The Broncos answered back again, with a power play goal of their own off the stick of Max Campbell at 9:58 of the third period. The 2-goal tie would hold for the remainder of regulation and the five-minute extra session as both teams had wide-open chances but neither could tickle the twine for the game-winner.
In the deciding shootout, WMU's Dennis Brown had the lone goal through three rounds to clinch the extra point.
For the game the Nanooks were outshot 38-29 and went 1-for-1 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The teams face off Saturday at 7 p.m. to close out the weekend series.
