FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Alaska Nanooks got multi-point games from five different players, led by a pair of goals and an assist from rookie center
Cody Kunyk, as they erupted offensively for a 6-2 win on Saturday night at the Carlson Center.
The win gives the Nanooks (12-10-4, 9-9-4-2 CCHA) a sweep of the Buckeyes, just their second this year. The six-point weekend propelled them back into fifth place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings, while the Buckeyes (13-12-2, 8-10-2-2 CCHA) held on to eighth place.
The Blue and Gold opened the scoring just 1:22 into the game on a tally by sophomore center
Jarret Granberg's. OSU's Alex Lippincott tied the game 12 minutes later, putting in the rebound of a Devon Krough shot past Alaska's goalie
Scott Greenham.
The Nanooks scored on the power play at 16:49 to regain the lead, as Kunyk was able to put the puck past Cal Heeter to make it 2-1. The Nanooks outshot the Buckeyes 19-8 through the first 20 minutes with each team getting one chance with the man advantage.
The second period was all Alaska, as the home team extended the lead to 5-1. At 4:05 senior captain
Kevin Petovello added the squad's second power-play tally to make it 3-1. Near the end of the period Alaska scored twice in 1:45, with sohpomore
Nik Yaremchuk lighting the lamp at 16:10, followed by a goal from sophomore defenseman
Cody Butcher at 17:55. Shots were 14-11 in favor of Alaska in the middle frame.
Each team scored once in the final 20 minutes. Kunyk netted his second tally of the game at 11:16 of the third period. At 14:04 Buckeye forward Peter Boyd answered for the visitors behind a 21-7 shot count in the period.
For the game, the shots were even at 40, with Greenham turning aside 38 Buckeye shots. For the visitors, Heeter had 28 saves with five goals allowed, before Jeff Michael made six saves and let in one more marker in relief of Heeter.
The Nanooks continue their two-week homestand with a series against Ferris State on Feb. 4-5 at the Carlson Center.
