Greenham, Nanooks Shutout Ohio State 1-0

FAIRBANKS, Alaska
- Junior goalie Scott Greenham made 27 saves en route to his record-setting eighth career shutout and sophomore right wing Andy Taranto netted the game-winning overtime goal as the Alaska Nanooks whitewashed the Ohio State Buckeyes 1-0 Friday night at the Carlson Center.

With the victory, Alaska (11-10-4, 8-9-4-2 CCHA) took over sixth place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings, while the Buckeyes (13-11-2, 8-9-2-2) fell to eighth.

The game proved a goaltending duel between two of the most seasoned netminders in all of NCAA Division I this season. Greenham and his counterpart, Cal Heeter, each collected their share of highlight reel saves throughout the first 60 minutes of play before a shot by sophomore forward Jarrett Granberg led to the end of the extra session just 20 seconds in.

After eliciting an interference penalty on OSU's Cory Schneider 11 seconds into the overtime period, it took just nine more to break the deadlock. Taranto won the offensive-zone draw back to senior captain Kevin Petovello then skated to the front of the net where he created just the right amount of traffic. Petovello fed the puck to junior defenseman Aaron Gens near the point, who chipped it back to Granberg in the right circle. Granberg fired the biscuit towards the mass of bodies that screened Heeter's view, where it kissed Taranto's jersey and was inadvertently redirected under the OSU netminder's leg pad.

The goal snapped the game's offensive drought and gave the Nanooks their first power-play marker in five tries on the night. It was also their first in 17 opportunities, with the last man-advantage marker coming in their 4-1 win at Notre Dame (Jan. 15).

For the game, the Blue and Gold outshot their guests 30-27 and denied them on all four of their power-play chances.

Alaska and OSU play a rematch Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
