MONMOUTH, OR – Alaska hot first half was not enough to propel the Nanooks to a GNAC win on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 102-61 contest to Western Oregon at the NPE Building in Monmouth, Oregon.
The Wolves stormed out of the game and took control early, starting the game on a 12-2 run. Western Oregon went on another run, this time 15-5, midway through the half to stretched their lead to 19 at 33-14.
Alaska cut the Wolves lead to only 14 late, after a Jessica Harrison (Las Vegas, NV) three-point field goal at the 3:15 mark, but Western Washington ran off the last nine points and went into the locker room with a 21-point lead.
Alaska went into the half shooting 55% (11-of-20) from the field, but was held to only 20 shot attempts. Harrison led the Blue and Gold with 11 points, while Lakeshia Levi (Warner Robins, GA) pulled down seven rebounds at the break.
Western Oregon shot 57% (20-of-35) from the field, with Lorrie Clifford scoring 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting to pace the Wolves.
Western Oregon continued to push their lead in the second half by scoring 12 of the first 14 points and never looking back.
Alaska finished the contest shooting 37% (19-of-52) from the field, led by Ronisha Edwards (Compton, CA) with 19 points and six rebounds. Alexandra Melonson (Seattle, WA) scored 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting, with Harrison also contributing 11 points.
Western Oregon was led by six double-figure scorers, headlined by Clifford with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Katie Torland scored 14 points as the Wolves shot 58% (37-for-64) from the field and 10-of-17 from behind the arc.
Alaska will not return to action until Saturday, February 27 when they travel to Anchorage to take on the rival Seawolves. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. AKT.
