LACEY, WA - The Nanooks nearly grabbing their second win in three games, but fell to Saint Martin's 80-74 on Thursday afternoon at Marcus Pavilion in Lacey, WA. Ronisha Edwards (Compton, CA) scored a game-high 23 points but Saint Martin's was able to counter with five players in double-figures to drop the Nanooks to 2-21 overall, 1-11 in the GNAC.
Both teams played a tight first half that saw 11 lead chances and nine ties, but ended with the Nanooks taking a 37-36 advantage into the locker room. The biggest lead either team would get in the first 20 minutes was only four points.
Edwards led all scorers with 11 points and five rebounds in the first stanza with Lakeshia Levi (Warner Robins, GA) scoring seven points, and went five-of-six from the free throw line. Alaska shot 41% (12-of-29) from the field and 91% (10-of-11) from the free throw line.
Saint Martin's went into the break shooting 47% (14-of-30), but was only able to hit 7-of-14 from the charity stripe. Dara Zach led the Saints with 10 points and seven rebounds, with Roni Jo Mielke chipping in eight points.
Saint Martin's opened up the second half on a 7-0 run to retake the lead, pushing their lead to as many as 12 with eight minutes left in the game.
After the Saints grabbed their 12 point lead the Nanooks stormed back and went on a 19-5 run to take a two point lead with a little over two minutes left in the game. However, Alaska could not hold on and the Saint's scored the last eight points of the contest to take home the victory.
The Nanooks finished the game shooting 47% (28-of-60) from the field, and knocked down eight three-pointers. Edwards led Alaska with 23 points and 14 rebounds, while Adrienne Beans (Mountain Village, AK) scored a season-high 18 points on six three-pointers.
Saint Martin's was led be five double-digit scorers including: Zach (16), Katie Hawkins (14), Mielke (14), Jamey Gelhar (12) and Krissy Bassett (10). Zach also picked up 12 rebounds, six of them offensive.
The Nanooks will return to the hardwood on Saturday when they travel to Monmouth, OR to face Western Oregon. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. AKT.
