FAIRBANKS, AK – The Alaska Nanooks got three goals from three different skaters and junior goalie Scott Greenham was perfect between the pipes with 26 saves as they blanked the visiting Michigan Wolverines 3-0 Friday night at the Carlson Center.
The Nanooks got on the board first at 12:23 of the first period, when rookie center Cody Kunyk collected a blocked shot by junior defenseman Joe Sova and fired it past U-M's Bryan Hogan to make it 1-0. Sova took a shot from the point, which was partially blocked by a Wolverine defender. The shot deflected to Kunyk, who was near the left face-off dot and who made good on his attempt. The Nanooks outshot the Wolverines 12-5 in the opening frame.
Coming back from the first intermission, junior forward Carlo Finucci doubled the home team's tally just 43 seconds in. Wolverine defenseman Chad Langlais turned the puck over near the right half boards. Senior center Derek Klassen took the gift and found Finucci skating from right to left across the front of the net. He faked a glove-side shot and froze Hogan on the near side before flipping the puck past his stick on his backhand.
U-M looked to answer mid-way through the period but David Wohlberg's attempt hit the left post and the cross bar without finding its way past Alaska's Scott Greenham.
Sova finally lit the lamp at 12:20 when the Nanooks were skating on the power play. He made it 3-0 when he sent a slap shot through high traffic that was unimpeded in its quest for the back of the Wolverines net.
Trialing by three goals, U-M looked to get back in the game in the final frame. They outshot the Nanooks 10-6, but could not solve Greenham and the home team's stingy defense.
The Blue and Gold finished the game 1-for-8 with the man advantage, while killing all five of Michigan's opportunities.
The teams cap the weekend series Saturday night with their second of four meetings on the slate this season. Opening faceoff is at 7:05 p.m.
