“I was really pleased with how the team did today,” said head coach
Scott Jerome. “Everyone did a very good job.”
Friday night's sprint race under the lights at the Birch Hill Recreation Area, was the first of three days of racing for the Nordic Cup and the Goldstream Sports Tour de Ski.
Even though the Nanooks took a commanding lead Friday night, Jerome knows the weekend is far from finished as the Nanooks try to retain the Nordic Cup for the third straight year.
“Two years ago Anchorage crushed us on the first day, but we came back to get the win on the second day,” Jerome said. “Anchorage has a very good team and I know they are capable of doing that to us.”
Junior
Theresia Schnurr of Germany led the Nanooks to a sweep of the top three spots in the overall standings.
Raphaela Sieber, a sophomore from Germany took the runner-up spot and Marit Rabov, a sophomore from Estonia finished third.
Tyler Kornfield, a sophomore from Anchorage, cruised to a victory of about 12 seconds to lead the Nanooks sweep of the top three collegiate finishers.
Lex Treinen, a junior from Anchorage who transferred to Fairbanks after skiing two seasons for the Seawolves, took second, and
John Parry, a senior from Whitehorse was third (fourth in the overall standings).
Erik Packer of the Anchorage Winter Stars was third in the overall men's standings.
The teams continue their quest for the cup Saturday afternoon. The women's race is slated to begin at Noon, while the men's race will follow at 1 p.m. The Alaska Nordic Cup events are the only college races in Alaska this year.
