FAIRBANKS, Alaska -
Parrish West opened the IBEW Alaska Invitational with a 32-point game against King College. He was the only Nanook to reach double digits in an 88-64 loss Thursday night.
West was the team's leading scorer last season, averaging 22.3 points per game. He opened the 2010-11 season scoring Alaska's first seven points and finished the first half with 17. But by the end of the half, Alaska was down 51-34, and the deficit only grew.
The Nanooks were outrebounded 48-28 but committed just three more turnovers (20-17) than King College. They were able to pull just five offensive boards, proving that they were outsized by the Tornado.
In the postgame press conference, head coach Clemon Johnson took responsibility for the loss, saying that the team didn't focus on the press enough. They were pressed and pressed hard.
After West, point guard
Jarrett Miller led with nine points.
Boe Edwards led the team with eight rebounds—all defensive.
The Tornado had three men reach double-digits in scoring, including leader Jason Seymore. Seymore finished with a double-double—18 points and 11 rebounds.
The IBEW Alaska Invitational continues Friday at 3 p.m. when West Florida squares off with King College. The Nanooks again play the late game at 5:15 p.m. against Arkansas Fort Smith.
