The Nanooks took the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls into double overtime in a 90-84 loss at the Patty Center Wednesday. The loss drops the team to 0-2 on the season heading into the Mt. McKinley North Star Invitational next weekend.
Whitney Anderson had a standout 22-point performance that included 10 from the line.
Jeni Gabriel had a 16-point night, and
Jessica Harrison missed her second consecutive double-double by a rebound with 10 points.
With :25 to play in the second half,
Autumn Greene tied the game 62-62 on a layup.
Britney Anderson picked up the assist but picked up an open court foul four seconds later to send the Cowgirls to the line.
Down 62-64,
Jeni Gabriel threw a pass away past Greene who ran wide open down the sideline but never looked back.
The Cowgirls capitalized on a Gabriel foul with one make at :14, but
Whitney Anderson answered back with a jumper to bring the Nanooks within a point at 64-65 with :04 to play.
The momentum had swung and Greene sank a buzzer-beating three pointer to send the game to its first overtime.
The Nanooks fought through one overtime but were overtaken by their own fouls in the second go around, where both Harrison and
Britney Anderson fouled out.
The game marks the first time since Feb. 12, 2009 that Alaska has reached overtime.
Alaska doesn't play again until Thanksgiving Day on the first day of the Mt. McKinley North Star Invitational. They'll take on Dominican at 7:30 at the Patty Center.
