FAIRBANKS, AK - Senior captain
Kevin Petovello lit the lamp twice to lead the No. 15 Alaska Nanooks to their first Central Collegiate Hockey Association win Friday night at the Carlson Center via a 4-1 victory over the Bowling Green Falcons. The win extended Alaska's home winning streak to three games and improved their season ledger to 4-2-1 overall and 1-1-1-1 in league play.
Rookie center
Cody Kunyk put the Nanooks on the scoreboard first at 8:43 of the first period. Sophomore
Andy Taranto and junior
Cody Butcher assisted on the tally, Alaska's lone even-strength score of the contest.
Petovello netted the eventual game-winner with a power-play goal at 19:01, while getting assistance from Taranto and junior defenseman
Joe Sova. Alaska outshot their guests 11-5 through the first 20 minutes of play.
The middle frame was more even keeled with the shots favoring the home team 7-6 and both teams going 0-for-3 with the man-advantage. The Blue and Gold got five shots on the power play and held the Falcons to just two.
Alaska widened the gap with a Jarrett Granberg power-play goal at 3:57, when he tipped a shot from the point by defenseman
Scott Enders to beat BGSU netminder Nick Eno and make it 3-1. Freshman forward
Colton Beck also notched an assist on the play.
Down but not out, the Falcons responded just under four minutes later with their only tally of the evening. Falcon center Jerry Freismuth fired a shot from the top of the right face-off circle and Greenham made the initial stop but could not control the rebound. BGSU's senior captain David Solway was ready at the left post, where he tapped the gift past Greenham to ruin his perfect game and make it 3-1 at 7:46.
Petovello beat Eno a second time to seal the game, when he fired a quick wrist shot from the slot at 17:18 to bring Alaska's 3,016 fans to their feet in celebration.
The Nanooks finished the game 3-for-7 on the power play and were perfect at 7-for-7 on the penalty kill.
Greenham made 22 saves en route to his fourth win of the season, while Eno made 23 saves for the Falcons.
Both teams return to the Carlson Center's Olympic ice-sheet Saturday at 7:05 p.m. to cap the weekend series with a rematch.
