Nanooks Face No. 16 Michigan State To Open CCHA Play

[Alaska at Michigan State Series Notes - Oct. 22-23, 2010]

FAIRBANKS, AK - The Blue and Gold open their 2010-11 Central Collegiate Hockey Association campaign on the road at Michigan State this weekend. Friday's game will be broadcast live on KXFX Fox 7 in Fairbanks with the live radio broadcast being aired on KSUA 91.5 FM (online at ksua.uaf.edu). Saturday's rematch will air live on KCBF 820 AM Sports or 820sports.com. Here are the need to know notes for the Michigan State series and Alaska Hockey:

• This weekend's series marks the Nanooks first time opening league-play against Michigan State since becoming a full member of the league. Alaska opened its 1994-95 league season at Michigan State, when it was still an affiliate member of the Michigan-based conference.

• When the teams met in Fairbanks last season on Feb. 5-6, the Nanooks beat the Spartans 2-0 and then tied them 1-1.

• Alaska trails 12-37-2 in the all-time series, including 5-23-0 in East Lansing; however, Alaska is unbeaten (2-0-1) in their last three games against MSU.

• The Nanooks topped two Top-20 teams on the weekend at the Brice Alaska Goal Rush to successfully capture their second straight title in their own tournament.

• Junior goalie Scott Greenham was named the 2010 Brice Alaska Goal Rush MVP after turning aside 44-of-46 shots faced through 120 minutes of action in a pair of non-conference games against Union and Colorado College.

• With a pair of 2-1 wins on the weekend, Alaska is riding a pair of streaks that date back to February 2010. The Blue and Gold are unbeaten in their last nine home games - since a 2-0 win over Michigan State on Feb. 5 - and undefeated in the last seven outings at the Carlson Center

• Senior captain Kevin Petovello (2-2—4) and junior defenseman Joe Sova (0-4—4) were selected to the Brice Alaska Goal Rush's all-tournament team. Petovello notched Friday's game-winning goal, while Sova set up both scores in the Nanooks' 2-1 victory against the Union Dutchmen.

• Senior forward Dustin Sather leads all returning skaters in scoring against MSU with four assists in five games. Junior defenseman Joe Sova has the second highest totals with 2-1--3 in four contests against the Spartans.

• Junior goalie Scott Greenham is unbeaten when playing Michigan State. Through three games and 184 minutes and 55 seconds of action he has compiled a shutout, a 2-0-1 record, 0.48 goals-against average and a .980 save percentage.
