Petovello Nets Game Winner As Nanooks Edge Dutchmen 2-1

[Box Score]

FAIRBANKS, AK -
Alaska Nanooks senior captain and forward Kevin Petovello (Sparwood, BC) brought 2,691 fans to their feet when he scored with just under three minutes left in the game to break a 1-1 tie and lift the home team to a 2-1 victory over the Union Dutchmen in the second game of the Brice Alaska Goal Rush.

The visitors got the early edge, scoring at 4:39 of the opening period with a Jeremy Welch power-play goal. With Joe Sova (Berwyn, IL) serving a two-minute minor for interference, Union freshmen Mat Bodie and Josh Jooris fed Welch the puck in the slot, where he sent it high over Nanook netminder Scott Greenham's (Addison, ON) shoulder to make it 1-0.

Sophomore right wing Andy Taranto (Woodridge, IL) evened the score for the Nanooks in the second stanza, when he beat Keith Kinkaid at 3:12 with assistance from defenseman Joe Sova.

The teams exchanged scoring chances attempting to break the deadlocked tally, but it was the Nanooks whose hard work eventually played off with Petovello's strike. Taranto fed the puck to Sova along the blueline, where Sova fired it toward the net and Petovello tipped it out of the air and past Kinkaid to make it 2-1 at 17:26 of the final frame.

For the game, the Nanooks were outshot by the Dutchmen 25-23. Alaska finished the contest 0-for-2 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill. Greenham turned aside 22 Union shots and Kinkaid had 23.

Alaska takes on Colorado College tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. in what will prove to be the tournament's title game. UAA and Union will face off at 4:05 p.m.
