FAIRBANKS, AK - Despite a career-high 29 points from senior
Ronisha Edwards (Compton, CA) the Nanooks could not break their 16 game losing streak and fell to Northwest Nazarene 91-56 on Thursday night in Nampa, ID.
Alaska took their first, and only, lead at the 19:09 mark on a midrange jump shot by
Alexandra Melonson (Seattle, WA) before the Nanooks saw the Crusaders go on a 37-2 run over 14:02 of the first half. The Nanooks broke double-figures with 3:37 left in the first half and was able to close the half on a 15-4 run to go into halftime only down 22 points.
Edwards went into the half with 12 points and Melonson scored 10 of her own as
Britany Anderson (Eielson, AK) was the only other Nanook to score a point in the half with just one. Alaska shot 7-of-24 from the field and committed 17 turnovers.
Lindsay Brady led eight Crusaders to find the score sheet with 12 points at the intermission as Northwest Nazarene shot 46% (19-of-41) and held a 26-14 rebounding advantage at the half.
It was much of the same for the Nanooks in the second half as Northwest Nazarene extended their lead to as many as 38 points. The Crusaders used a 20-6 run during the middle portion of the half to put the game out of reach.
Edwards led all scorers with 29 points on 11-of-30 shooting with Melonson the only other Nanook in double-figures with 10 points. Edwards also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds in the loss.
Northwest Nazarene saw five players score double-figures, headlined by Brady who scored 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Beth Johnson (18), Brittney Roggenkamp (14), Kristin Hein (10) and Katherine Schulte to Buhne (10) also scored double-figures. All 11 players who saw playing time found the score sheet for the Crusaders. Jennifer Williams pulled down eight rebounds and Johnson went 9-of-9 from the field for her 18 points in the victory.
Northwest Nazarene was able to capitalize on 30 Nanook turnovers with 42 points coming from those turnovers and scored 48 points in the paint as opposed to the Nanooks' 18.
Alaska will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Seattle, WA to take on Seattle Pacific. Tip-off is set for 12:30 p.m.
