ANN ARBOR, MI - A minute and a half and a three-goal flurry late in the first period was all it took to deflate the sails of the Alaska Nanooks Friday night. Their hosts, the Michigan Wolverines, never looked back as they double up and held the Blue and Gold scoreless through the remainder of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association match-up for a 6-0 whitewashing at Yost Arena.

It appeared as though the Wolverines were out for revenge as the Nanooks had been on the opposite side of the spectrum when the met for a non-conference contest in October at the 2009 Kendall Hockey Classic and shut U-M out 2-0 for the first time ever.

The teams played even through the first 17 minutes of the game, but the home team exploded for three goals in 83 seconds late in the first period. The Nanooks never recovered.

With a 3-0 deficit after the first 20 minutes, head coach
Dallas Ferguson opted to replace starting goalie Scott Greenham with rookie netminder Steve Thompson. The Anchorage native went on to stop 19 Michigan shots over the final 40 minutes but not before the Wolverines would double their score and keep the Nanooks scoreless.

The least penalized team in the country entering the contest, Alaska registered a season-high 11 penalties for 22 minutes. It proved detrimental as two of the four goals scored by Michigan came with the man-advantage.

Both teams return to action Saturday for the series finale. Opening faceoff is at 3:35 p.m. EST.
