Nanooks Hang Tough With GNAC Leaders But Fall in the End

Box Score

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Alaska once again stood toe-to-toe with one of the GNAC's upper echelon teams in Western Washington, but fell short to the Vikings on Saturday night 99-92 at the Patty Center.

A combined 68 points from Emmanuel Jenkins, Jon Moe, and Colin Matteson was still not enough to counter the five Vikings in double figures. Matteson's season high 23-points earned him Toyota Player of the Game honors.

The Blue and Gold trailed the entire game and faced their biggest deficit of 13 points. They were able to cut the WWU lead to 75-72 with under seven minutes to play, and had a chance to tie the game but a three point jumper from Moe was off the mark. Moe shot just 2-13 FG, but set a new Alaska record at the free throw line making 16-16.

The Vikings (15-3, 7-1 GNAC) came in as the top rebounding team in the conference, yet Alaska won the battle on the glass 44-37, including 19 offensive rebounds. Nashorn Maynards' 13 rebounds were a game high.

Alaska (5-13, 2-7 GNAC) wraps up their three-game home stand on Valentines Day against Montana State Billings before embarking on another four game road trip. The last meeting between the Nanooks and Yellowjackets was a 118-112 double-overtime loss for the Blue and Gold. The game with Billings is the second half of a double header as the Alaska women host Western Washington at 5:15 p.m. The men's tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
