Huge Second Half From WWU Dooms Nanooks

Box Score

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Leading by three at halftime, the Nanooks saw Western Washington outscore them by 19 in the second half and handed the Blue and Gold a 96-80 loss on Thursday night at Carver Gym in Bellingham, WA.

Junior guard Jon Moe jump-started Alaska in the first half scoring 16 of his game high 23 points before the break. The Nanooks never trailed in the first 20 minutes and saw their largest lead grow to 10 points. They went into the locker room ahead 40-37.

The two teams battled back and forth for most of the second half as the game was even at 70 with just over five minutes to go. However, the Vikings used a 16-4 run over the next three minutes to run away from Alaska down the stretch. WWU outscored the Nanooks 26-10 to end the game and improved to a GNAC best 9-2 in conference.

Guard Emmanuel Jenkins was right behind Moe in scoring with 21 points, and Alaska’s third leading scorer, Nashorn Maynard, had 10 points. It would not be enough though, as WWU showed their balance with five players scoring in double figures, led by Morris Anderson with 17 points on 6-12 FG.

Alaska's loss to the GNAC leading Vikings drops them to 6-14 (3-8 GNAC). Up next the Nanooks have a game with Seattle Pacific looming on Saturday in Seattle. The Alaska women will take the court against the Falcons at 4:15 in the first game of a double header, and the men will take the court at 6:30 p.m. ASKT.
