ANCHORAGE, AK - Despite 16 points and seven rebounds from
Lakeshia Levi (Warner Robins, GA) the Nanooks dropped a non-conference match with BYU-Hawaii on Thursday. Alaska trailed by 17 points at the half and was outscored by 10 more points in the second half in a 81-54 loss.
BYU-Hawaii outscored Alaska 12-2 in the first five minutes of the half and never let Alaska get closer than four in a one sided first half. Richelle Fenenbock led BYU-Hawaii with 15 points in the half on 5 of 9 shooting as the Seasiders shot 46% (18 of 39) from the field and held the Nanooks to only 23% (7 of 30) shooting.
Levi led the Nanooks with 11 points at the half, as Alaska shot 12 of 13 from the free throw line. The Nanooks committed 11 turnovers that led to 10 Seasiders points.
BYU-Hawaii continued their strong play in the second half as they shot 50% (14 of 28) from the field, while being led by Kristen Hartley who scored 10 points on 3 of 4 shooting. Alaska improved in the second half to shoot 38%, but could not overcome the first half deficit.
The Nanooks were led by Levi who had a team-high 16 points on 6 of 12 shooting, while
Jessica Harrison (Las Vegas, NV) (13) and
Alexandra Melonson (Seattle, WA) (10) also scored in double figures. Alaska finished the game shooting 31% (19 for 62) from the field and only hitting three of their 19 three-point chances.
BYU-Hawaii was led by Richelle Fenebock who scored a game-high 23 points on 8 of 14 shooting, which included five three-point baskets. Kristen Hartley scored 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while Dara Tompkison dished out seven assists in the win.
BYU-Hawaii shot 48% (32 of 67) and hitting 6 of 11 three-point shots.
Alaska will return to action when they face off against Grand Canyon in the AT&T Classic hosted by Alaska Anchorage. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m. Alaska time.
