EL PASO, TX - The Alaska Nanook rifle team opened its 2009-10 campaign with a bang, topping the University of Texas El Paso Miners with an aggregate score of 4646-4564 on Sunday at the UTEP Rifle Range.
Alaska jumped out to an early lead, handily taking the air rifle with a 2347 to outscore UTEP (2307) by 40 points. They maintained their dominance in the smallbore, improving their advantage with a 2299 to the Miners' 2257.
Junior
Cody Rutter (Palmyra, PA) was the Nanooks' top shooter on the day registering match-highs in air rifle (592) and small bore (583). Close behind was senior
Patrik Sartz (Stora Sundby, Sweden), whose air rifle score of 588 tied him for third in the individual standings, and small bore performance of 577 was third best.
Rounding out Alaska's air rifle starters were junior
Jace Bures (Odell, NE) (585) and rookie
Dustin Chesebro (Laramie, WY) (582), while Bures (566) and senior
Layne Lewis (Fairbanks, AK) (573) completed the scoring team in small bore.
Other Nanooks who took to the line Sunday, included rookie
Scott Franz (Livermore, CO), who shot a 579 in air rifle and 568 in small bore.
The Blue and Gold continue their three-match road trip, taking on the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs on Wednesday in Fort Worth, Texas.
