FAIRBAN KS, AK - Coming off an impressive showing Friday night the Alaska Nanooks swim team returned to the pool with another stellar performance in defeating California (PA) on Saturday 118-86. The Nanooks took home victories in nine of the 11 events to win their first dual meet of the season. Over the two meets Alaska won 16 of the 22 total events.
The Nanooks came charging out of the gate winning the first five events before California (PA) took the victory in the 100-yard butterfly. The team of
Mariya Pavlovskaya (Korolev City, Russia),
Courtney Nichols (Columbia,SC),
Kelly Becker (Tualatin, OR) and
Felina Rosadiuk (Fairbanks, AK) took home victory in the 400-yard medley relay by four seconds over their closest competitor.
Pavlovskaya took home two other wins outside of the relay with a three second victory in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:01.34 while narrowly defeating California's Melissa Gates in he 100-yard breaststroke. Pavlovskaya was trailing Gates until the last 50 yards when she vaulted into first place to win by only .29 seconds with a time of 1:09.68.
Freshman
Meghan O'Leary (Seward, AK) had a strong day in the pool as she swam lifetime bests in two events, the 200 and 500-yard freestyle. O'Leary finished the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:04.60, only .58 seconds behind winner Kelly Becker.
Rosadiuk finished up another strong weekend for the Nanooks by winning the 50 yard freestyle event in 25.22 seconds. Rosadiuk nearly took home a win the in the 100-yard freestyle but fell to Melissa Gates who set a new pool record with a time of 53.37 seconds.
Becker (200-yard freestyle, 2:04.02), Nichols (200-yard IM, 2:17.13) and
Heidi Tilicki (Junction City, OR)(500-yard freestyle, 5:26.30) also took home wins in individual events for the Nanooks.
The Nanooks will return to the pool October 30 and 31 when they will battle Kutztown. The match is set to start at 6:00 PM on Friday and 12:00 PM on Saturday.
