GNAC Season Opener a Loss to a Strong Centeral Washington Team

Box Score

Trailing all night, the Nanooks couldn't find enough fire power to fuel a comeback against Central Washington as the Wildcats would prevail behind 33 points and 16 rebounds from Matt Penoncello, 92-80.

Emmanuel Jenkins
would keep his team in the game early on with a spectacular behind the back assists to Clayton Edwin, and a two-point prayer hook shot over his head that was answered, but CWU methodically forged ahead.

First half turnovers would damper any momentum the Nanooks tried to build and they could not stop Pononcello as the CWU forward sharp shooter went off for 22 points, and led his team to a 50-34 halftime lead.

The Nanooks would cut the lead to 12 at 72-60 with just under eight minutes to go, but that is the closest they would get as the wildcats sat on a comfortable lead behind 50 percent field goal shooting for the game.

The Blue and Gold were almost doubled on the boards at 50-26 and were doubled in the assist department as the Wildcats dished out 24 assists compared to 12 for the Nanooks.

Junior guard Jon Moe was the leading scorer for Alaska at 23 points on 9-21 shooting, while Jenkins followed up Moe with 18 points but had eight of the teams 12 assists. Clayton Edwin had a career high 13 points in the loss.

The first lose at home for Alaska drops them to 3-7 (0-1 GNAC), but will look to rebound on Saturday night as they host Northwest Nazarene which has been deemed "Kids Take Over Night." Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Patty Center.
