MONMOUTH, Ore. - Sophomores Nashorn Maynard and Mike Anderson led a balanced Alaska attack as the Nanooks earned their first road victory of the season by defeated Western Oregon 79-76 on Saturday night at the New PE Building in Monmouth.
Maynard led the way for the Blue and Gold in the first half with ten points and a perfect 5-5 from the floor. He was one of eight different Nanooks to score in the first 20 minutes, however they were trailing by one going into the locker room, 43-42.
Anderson made the most of his first start of the season with a career-high 15 points and eight rebounds. Anderson’s big night helped the Blue and Gold outscore the Wolves 37-33 in the second half and gave the Nanooks their second conference win of the season.
Maynard and Anderson finished the game with a team high 15 points, while Emmanuel Jenkins, Jon Moe, and Colin Matteson all reached double figures as well. Matteson finished with 10 points and a team high 13 rebounds and Jenkins had 13 points, five rebounds, and six assists.
The victory over WOU improves Alaska to 5-10 (2-4 GNAC), and they have matched their conference win total from a year ago. The Wolves are now in the basement of the GNAC looking up with a record of 7-9 (1-4 GNAC).
Up next for the Nanooks is a redemption game with in-state rival Alaska Anchorage on Jan. 31. The Seawolves defeated the Nanooks 81-52 just two weeks ago at the Patty Center. Tip is scheduled for 7:30 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex in Anchorage.
