Fairbanks, AK – For the third time in four games this year, the Alaska Nanooks and the Mavericks of Nebraska-Omaha skated to a tie. The Blue and Gold, however, gained the extra point on Saturday night as netminder and Hobey Baker Nominee Chad Johnson blanked UNO in the shootout, while Ryan Hohl netted the game winner.
Hohl also tallied the Nanooks goal in regulation in the first 20 minutes of play as he redirected a shot from the point off the stick of Aaron Gens past Mavericks senior goalie Jerad Kaufmann for a 1-0 lead. Gens and Justin Brossman were credited with the assists on Hohl’s sixth goal of the season. The time of the goal was 5:43.
At 8:14 of the second stanza the Mavericks drew even at 1-1. Dan Charleston’s ninth goal of the season came from point blank range as he ripped a slap shot top self past Johnson. Alaska was caught out of position and allowed a 2-1 in the back and Charleston made no mistake.
Alaska and UNO skated evenly in the third period and overtime, but UNO held the shot advantage at 28-22.
The Toyota Player of the Game shined in the shootout as Johnson denied all three Maverick skaters. Hohl was the second player for Alaska in the shootout and buried his opportunity, which lifted the Blue and Gold to two points on the night and four points for the weekend.
The Nanooks are 1-0-3-2 against their rivalry partners in their four games this season.
Alaska improves to 11-8-5 (9-7-4-3 CCHA) and sits tied with Miami for second place in the CCHA with 25 points. UNO is now 13-8-4 (8-6-4-2 CCHA) and leaves Fairbanks with only one point on the weekend.
