Nanooks Win Home Opener, and First of the Year

Box Score

A back and forth battle between the Nanooks and the St. Thomas Bobcats saw Alaska hold onto a second half lead to capture their first victory of the season 71-63 on the first day of the Glacier Classic.

Junior sharp shooter Jon Moe (Granite Falls, WA) scored a team high in the first half with all 12 of his points coming from behind the arc. However, the Blue and Gold were down two at half, 29-27.

Sophomore Nashorn Maynard (Saint Paul, Saint Kitts) was held quiet because of two early fouls, and finished the half with just four points and two rebounds. Alaska shot 34.5 percent from the field but only made four of 10 free throws.

The second half saw Alaska storm out of the locker room on an 8-0 run to give the Nanooks a 35-29 lead, a lead the Blue and Gold would not relinquish. Yet the Bobcats would keep things close.

Down the stretch with the game still in the balance, Moe and St. Thomas' Antonio Jones would trade buckets back and forth. But with the score 60-58 in favor of Alaska, it would be Moe's clutch three with just over a minute left that gave the Nanooks the five point cushion which forced St. Thomas to foul. Alaska would ice the game at the line and capture the 71-63 victory

Moe finished with a game high of 33 points on 10-21 shooting and hit seven of his 12 from downtown. He also added a career high six rebounds and only committed one turnover. Moe was the Toyota Player of the Game.

Emmanuel Jenkins
(Tacoma, WA) added 20 points on a solid 9-14 from the floor, plus four assists. Maynard finished the game with seven points and 10 rebounds.

The first home game for Alaska was also their first win. The are now 1-6 on the season and look to string back-to-back wins together tomorrow night as they play host to Virginia State at 8:00 p.m.

The 5:30 game had UAA jump on Virginia State and they not let up. The Seawolves saw Kenny Barker drop a season and game high 29 points, and helped UAA cruised to a 89-64 victory.

Barker had 19 of his 29 points in half one, shooting 6-8 from the field, and a perfect 3-3 from downtown. The Seawolves were up 13 at halftime, 46-33.

The second 20 minutes was much of the same for UAA as they controlled half two despite the high pressure put on by VSU. Brandon Walker score 13 of his 28 points in the second half, making all six of his free throw attempts.

For the game, UAA shot 61.2 percent compared to just 34.5 percent for the Trojans. The Seawolves play again tomorrow in the first game of day two at 5:30 p.m. against St. Thomas.
