The Nanooks let a 12 point second half lead slip away and lost a hard fought battle at Chico State, 68-64.

The Blue and Gold were in favor of a 50-38 lead with under 15 minutes to go in the game, but saw the Wildcats charge back and win their season and home opener over Alaska by four.

The two teams were evenly matched and headed into the locker room with Coach Smiths’ Nanooks leading 32-30 behind a 6-0 run to end the half.

The Blue and Gold picked up right where they left off to start the second half, hitting their first four three’s to spur an 18-8 run.  But Chico State, behind their home crowd, forced the ball down low, converted, and landed a come from behind victory over the Nanooks.

Sheena Brown (Fairbanks, AK) led the way for the Blue and Gold with 21 points on 7-13 shooting. She also added five assists and three rebounds. Brown hit all four of her three pointers.

Alaska also had great production from the two Riverside, CA natives, Ronisha Edwards and La-Quita Jordan. Edwards shot 60 percent from the field and dropped 17 points. Jordan was the third player for Alaska in double figures with 15 points.

If the Nanooks can take any good away from the game, they stood toe-to-toe with an NCAA team of last year that finished 28-6. Alaska, now 1-1, will take part in the Carl’s Jr. Coslet Classic hosted by Chico State, where they will face Sonoma State on Friday, and Chico State again on Saturday.
