If the Alaska Nanooks are going to repeat as NCAA rifle championships in March, how they perform in the air rifle portion of the match will be the key, according to coach Dan Jordan.
"I've been stressing to the team all year that if they want to make an impact, air gun is where to do it," Jordan said following the Nanooks 4,668-4,633 victory over Navy on Thursday in Annapolis, Md.
"Everyone can shoot decent smallbore, but to put together four top-notch air gun shooters is where you'll do it," Jordan said. "We've done it over and over this year and now it's really starting to show."
That was definitely the difference on Thursday as both teams posted scores of 2,302 in smallbore, but Alaska outscored Navy 2,366-2,331 in the air rifle competition.
Junior Christofer Olofsson and senior Patrik Sartz led the way for the Nanooks in air rifle with scores of 595 and 594, respectively, out of a possible 600.
"Patrik and Christofer both put up big scores again, and Taylor and Cody really put up some good scores as well," Jordan said.
Freshmen Cody Rutter came in with a 589 and freshman Taylor Beard registered a 588.
Alaska's non-scoring air rifle scores included a 584 by sophomore Billy Galligan, a 583 by freshman Ida Petersen, a 576 by sophomore Jace Bures and a 569 by sophomore Layne Lewis.
"For a bunch of freshmen and sophomores, I wouldn't say they are doing too bad," Jordan said.
Olofsson topped the smallbore team with a 580, followed by Sartz with a 576, Rutter with a 574 and Galligan with a 572.
Non-scoring members of the team were Lewis at 573, Bures at 570, Petersen at 566 and Beard at 566.
The Nanooks won all three matches on their final road trip of the season and are tied for second with Kentucky in the Palmyra Invitational that still has one more week before final results are tallied.
The Nanooks head home today to begin preparations for the 2008 NCAA qualifying match on Feb. 16-17 at the Patty Center.
