Golden Bears Too Strong For Nanooks

Final Stats

BERKELEY, CA- Pac-10 powerhouses California proved to be too much for the Alaska Nanooks, as the Blue and Gold fell 100-42 in their exhibition against the Division I Golden Bears. Facing a significant height advantage, as Cal boasted no fewer than five players over six-foot ten, the Nanooks could shoot just 24 percent for the game, and hit just two three-pointers on the night.

Alaska led only once on the night, taking a 5-4 lead on a Colin Matteson three-pointer just two minutes in. From there, however, the Bears ran rampant, shooting over 50 percent in both halves and opening the second half with a 20-2 run.

Sophomore Kevin Atkins continued to be a bright spot for the Blue and Gold, leading the team in scoring for the second straight game with 17 points on 7-14 shooting from the floor. Atkins, who also logged a block and two steals, is the only Nanook to score in double-figures in each of the team's three games this year.

Guard Patrick Christopher and forward Ryan Anderson did most of the damage for the Golden Bears. Christopher rang up a game-high 32 points, draining five of the team's 13 three-pointers, while Anderson chipped in 23 points as well. Jordan Wilkes pulled down 10 boards as Cal out-rebounded Alaska 52-36.

The Nanooks now return home for the BP Top of the World Classic, which tips off on Thursday with a meeting between Alaska and Tennessee State. That clash is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start at the Carlson Center. For more information, including how to purchase tickets, please contact the Alaska ticket office at 474-5977.
