LINCOLN, NE: Rifle coach Dan Jordan got a champions' response from his team on Sunday, as the team rebounded from their first loss in nearly two years to comfortably defeat a competitive Nebraska team, 4654-4154. With the win, the Nanooks conclude their fall schedule at 5-1 on the year, putting them in a good shape going into the all-important winter season.
Patrik Sartz was particularly sharp, shooting his best round of the season: a 594 in air rifle. Fellow Swede Christofer Olofsson fired a new season-high for himself in air rifle as well, putting up a 593. The Blue and Gold also rostered Taylor Beard and Ida Petersen in air rifle, scoring 586 and 582, respectively.
It was sophomore Jace Bures, however, who led the way for Alaska in the smallbore discipline. His match-high 580 helped the Nanooks to a 2299-2292 advantage in smallbore, and set them on their way to an impressive victory. Olofsson (577), Sartz (574) and Layne Lewis (568) rounded out the event for Alaska.
The Nanooks return to Fairbanks for some well-earned time off after a difficult five-day road trip. The team will then set about defending its NCAA championship, starting on January 18 against the mighty Mountaineers of West Virginia.
