BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Alaska Nanooks settled for a 2-2 tie Saturday night against the Bowling Green State University Falcons, earning their third point of the weekend at the BGSU Ice Arena.
The Nanooks (8-13-5, 6-10-4) held on to 10th place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings and the Falcons (5-22-2, 3-17-1) remained in last.
For the second time in as many games the Nanooks were able to take the early lead, getting on the scoreboard at the 9:19 mark of the first period.
Alaska's sophomore left wing Trevor Hyatt (Anchorage, AK) dumped the puck into the left corner, only to have the puck hit off a broken stick and direct into the front of the BGSU net. The puck bounced right to his linemate, junior right wing Ryan Muspratt (Calgary, AB), who deposited it puck past BGSU's goalie Jimmy Spratt for this third goal of the season.
BGSU got the equalizer three minutes later when Brandon Svendsen one-timed a shot past the Nanooks' netminder Wylie Rogers (Fairbanks, AK) while on the power-play. The score remained knotted for the remainder of the period.
With no scoring in the second period, the two teams entered the third at one apiece. Alaska's senior center Curtis Fraser notched his third goal of the weekend, recording a power-play goal at the 4:05 mark of the third. It was Alaska's 11th power-play attempt on the night after being denied on all 10 of their opportunities in the first two periods. Fraser moved into a two-way tie with junior forward Kyle Greentree (Victoria, BC) for the lead in power-play goals with nine.
The one-goal advantage did not last however, as the Falcons Todd McIlrath scored BGSU's second power-play goal of the game at the 15:47 mark of the third. Unable to find an answer in regulation time, the teams went to the extra session.
It wasn't enough for either squad to take the contest as the stalemate continued through the extra five minute period. BGSU outshot Alaska in overtime with a 2-1 advantage.
Alaska went 1-for-12 on the power-play after going 4-for-9 in Friday's match-up. BGSU turned their special teams around in the re-match getting both goals when skating with the man-advantage after being held scoreless in five opportunities the night before.
For the game both teams had 14 penalties and 28 penalty minutes. There were 23 power-play attempts, and 30:39 seconds of the contest was played on the power play.
Rogers finished the contest with 19 saves, while the Falcons' Jimmy Spratt made 37 saves.
It marked the seventh time this season the Nanooks took a game to overtime and they remained winless in those seven games, with five of them ending in a tie.
The Nanooks return to Fairbanks to host second place Miami at the Carlson Center Feb. 2-3. They play six of their final eight games at home. Opening face off is 7:05 p.m. AKST both nights.
