Fairbanks, AK - The Alaska Nanook rifle team continued their East Coast road trip with a dominant victory over the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia at the Colonel William Shea Rifle Range in Philadelphia Thursday. The Nanooks, who remain undefeated on the season, out-shot the Devils 4673-4127 overall in taking both the smallbore and air rifle events.
"Things went pretty well and air was still fairly strong," head coach Dan Jordan said. "USP isn't one of the top teams in the country but they are a team that doesn't shy away from competition. They compete against many of the top teams in the country every year."
Senior Matthew Rawlings (Wharton, TX) and senior Matthias Dierolf (Uttenhofen, Germany) atop the smallbore standings with scores of 580 each, as every Nanook outshot their Devil counterparts. Junior Michelle Bauer topped USP with a score of 561. The Nanooks outscored the Devils 2316-2025 in the smallbore.
Dierolf also topped Alaska with a 594 in the air rifle, as every Nanooks again posted higher marks than any USP competitor. Alaska posted a 2357-2102 advantage over the home team, as Bauer led the Devils with a score of 577. Senior Kimberly Harris (Fairbanks, AK) and freshman Becky Hershberger (Bedford, PA) saw their first official action of the season and posted scores of 589 and 584, respectively.
Jordan was happy to get Harris and Hershberger some time in the line-up.
"Both Kim and Becky did pretty well," Jordan said. "Kim has really been shooting well on this trip in the air gun and it was good to see her step up today."
The Nanooks conclude their rapid road trip with a meet at Navy in Annapolis, MD tomorrow. It will be the fourth meet in five days and conclude the season road schedule for the Alaska shooters. They then return home to host the University of Missouri-Kansas City Feb. 9 and 10 at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range in the Patty Center.
