Former Nanook Skier Participates in Torino Olympic Games

FAIRBANKS, AK - Former University of Alaska Fairbanks ski team member and 2003 All-American, Michal Malak (Vysoke Tatry, Slovakia) competed in the 2006 Olympic Games in Torino, Italy, representing his home country of Slovakia. Malak finished 54th in the 30 km pursuit (1:23:39.9), 74th in the 15 km classic (44:52.9) and 45th in the 50 km free (2:09:38.7). Malak skied for only one year at UAF during the 2002-03 season, in which he finished fifth at the 2003 NCAA National Championships in the 10km classic (24:52.6) to earn All-America honors. He also finished 20th in the 20km classic (1:01:36.8). Prior to coming to UAF, Malak skied to an eighth place finish in the World Under-23 Championships in the 30k during the 2001-02 season. In 2001 Malak was a member of the Slovakian national team, participating in the World Nordic Ski Championships in Lahti, Finland. Some of Malak's former teammates in 2002-03 include current Nanook seniors Jonas Tetlie, Johanna Turunen and Erik Wickstrom.
