FAIRBANKS – The Nanooks swimming team picked up a 100-86 win over the Westmont College Warriors on Friday afternoon to move to 5-3 in dual meets this season. Alaska won seven of the 10 events during the meet.
The 'Nooks began the meet by taking the top spot in the 400-yard medley relay, as the team of McKenzie Fazio, Dorka Dancsok, Cosima Schmiedel and Ali Pecore placed first with a 4:04.80, which was 5.8 seconds in front second place. Mariia Sirotinskaia was Alaska's highest finisher in the 1650-yard freestyle, posting a time of 19:00.06 to take third in the event.
Pecore would claim her first of two individual victories in the 50-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 24.58. She also placed first in the 100-yard freestyle with a 54.23. Dancsok's 2:11.59 in the 200-yard IM was 4.44 seconds in front of the second-place finisher, as she cruised to a victory in the event. Up next was the 100-yard butterfly, where Giorgia Merlo and Schmiedel finished 1-2, posting times of 1:00.57 and 1:01.29 to lead the way.
Fazio led the way for the Nanooks in the 200-yard freestyle, swimming to a 2:02.58 to place third, while Dancsok finished the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.48 to take second.
Schmiedel grabbed the win in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:10.25 to claim her first individual victory of the day in the penultimate event of the meet. The day concluded with the 400-yard freestyle relay, where the team of Fazio, Merlo, Dancsok and Pecore would complete their race in 3:41.32 to secure Alaska's seventh win of the afternoon.
The Nanooks are back in the pool tomorrow, Jan. 17, at 10 a.m., in their final home meet of the season. Tomorrow will be Alaska's Senior Day, where they will honor their senior class during the meet.
