HONOLULU -- The Nanooks men's basketball team wrapped up its trip to Hawaii with a Monday night rematch against Chaminade. Despite a 28-point effort by Isaiah Saams-Hoy and a 12-point, 14-rebound double-double from Jalai O'Keith, the Nanooks could not get the win against the Silverswords, falling to 0-3 on the year with the 91-84 loss.
A Saams-Hoy layup put the 'Nooks on the board with the game's first points. After five straight Silversword points, Chris Lee drained a shot from distance to tie the score at five. Paul Johnson put Alaska back in front with another three-pointer, and despite back-to-back two-point scores for CUH, an Elyon Zevenbergen layup gave the Nanooks the lead again at 10-9. From there, the Blue and Gold continued to build on its advantage, and after a 7-0 run with another Johnson three and two more Saams-Hoy buckets, Alaska found itself up 25-15 with 8:56 left in the half. Both teams traded and-ones on the following two possessions, with Saams-Hoy converting the three-point play for the Nanooks, but Chaminade answered with an 18-2 run to put itself ahead 36-30. Ketan Sidhu ended the run with a made layup, and Saams-Hoy continued his lights-out shooting in the first half with a pair of jump shots, but the Nanooks could not regain the lead. O'Keith drilled a three with 32 seconds left in the half to bring the deficit down to two, but a Kameron Ng offensive rebound and put-back as time expired gave the Silverswords the 45-41 lead heading into the break.
Chaminade began the second half on an 8-4 run, extending its lead to 53-45. However, the Nanooks countered by scoring their next six points unanswered, with baskets from Johnson, Lee and O'Keith putting Alaska within two points of CUH. Chaminade rebuilt its advantage to six with a 6-2 run, but the Nanooks responded with another Saams-Hoy bucket and two O'Keith free throws to make it a 59-57 contest. From there, Alaska kept the deficit to within five and would take the lead on a Zevenbergen layup with 12:08 remaining, putting it up 65-64. Both sides traded the lead on three-pointers, with O'Keith giving Alaska its one-point advantage back with a connection from beyond the arc. However, CUH logged an 8-0 run, receiving two Jamir Thomas threes on back-to-back Silversword possessions to put the hosts up 75-68 just past the halfway point of the second. Jordan Gill answered with a pair of layups to end the run, and a 6-0 run for the Nanooks later in the second made it 81-80 with 4:22 remaining. At the 2:41 mark, Saams-Hoy put Alaska within one after he was fouled on a made jumper, but could not connect from the line. He kept the Nanooks within striking distance with a bucket on the following possession, but CUH would pull away in the closing stages, ending the contest by scoring the final five points to take the 91-84 victory.
Despite having four players crack double-digit scoring, including a breakout, 12-of-15 shooting performance from Saams-Hoy in his third game for the Nanooks, Alaska's 21 turnovers proved too much to overcome.
The Nanooks are back in action in 11Â days when they play their home opener against Multnomah on Friday, November 22, at 7 p.m.
