FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks swim team earned their first dual victory of the season on Friday afternoon, winning 145-59 at home against Fresno Pacific. Alaska won 10 of the 11 events they competed in today.
The day began with the 400-yard medley relay, which saw the relay team of Charlotte Fletcher-Stables, Dorka Dancsok, Cosima Schmiedel and Jordan O'Connor take first with a 3:59.79. Tori Shoemaker followed by placing first in the 1,650-yard freestyle at 18:17.15, while Payton Wojciechowicz posted an 18:24.71 to take second in the event.
Charlotte Wilbers of FPU took first in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:59.00, with Ali Pecore finishing less than two seconds behind with a 2:00.68. O'Connor came in .04 seconds behind Pecore to take third in the event for the Nanooks, while Naomi Burgan took fourth with a time of 2:03.47. Janci Pangburn followed by winning the fourth event of the day, the 50-yard freestyle. She posted a 24:71, just ahead of FPU's Jillian Lambert, who clocked in at 24.96. Sam Bristor and Eva Markovic placed third and fourth in the event for Alaska with times of 25.23 and 25.91, respectively.
In the 200-yard IM, Dancsok would lead the way with a 2:12.12, over four seconds ahead of teammate Schmiedel in second at 2:16.92. Charisma Watkins took fifth in the event, recording a 2:20.19. Schmiedel would win in the following event, posting a 1:00.82 to place first in the 100-yard butterfly. Adeline Berry finished with a 1:02.62, good enough for second-place behind her teammate, while Mayumi Schaetzle took fifth with a time of 1:07.77.
In the seventh event this afternoon, Pangburn logged her second first-place finish of the meet, recording a 53.66 in the 100-yard freestyle to finish just over a second in front of teammate Bristor, whose 54.76 put her second. Fletcher-Stables notched the victory in the 100-yard backstroke, as her time of 59.23 placed her ahead of O'Connor in second with a 59.81. Markovic took fourth in the event for the Nanooks with a time of 1:05.70. Alaska recorded another 1-2 finish in the 500-yard freestyle, as Pecore came in first at 5:25.91 and Burgan posted a 5:27.61, which put her less than .3 seconds in front of FPU's Leticia Dias for second place. In the 10th event of the day, Dancsok notched another first-place finish, posting a 1:07.73 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Schaetzle and Watkins took third and fourth with times of 1:11.58 and 1:13.89, respectively.
The meet concluded with the 400-yard freestyle relay, where Schmiedel, O'Connor, Pangburn and Bristor took first for the Nanooks by recording a 3:37.63.
"The energy that Nanook Swimming brought to the pool today was outstanding," head coach Ksenia Gromova said on the team's dual meet victory over Fresno Pacific. "The team started by winning the 400 medley relay and continued by getting first and second in the mile, with their times ranking second and fourth in the conference. Out of 11 events today, we won 10. The team had lots of great swims today. We are very proud and inspired by this amazing group of women. The goal is to keep the ball rolling tomorrow and the rest of the season."
The Nanooks are back in the pool tomorrow with another dual meet vs. the Sunbirds at 10 a.m. at the Patty Center Pool.
