BILLINGS, Mont. - The Alaska Nanooks cross country teams raced at the Yellowjackets/Battlin' Bear Open on Friday, Sept. 7. The Nanooks women's team finished third with 62 points while the men finished fifth-place with a total of 136 points.Â
The men's side opened up the day with an 8k race at 10:30 a.m. AKT. Jackson Wilson of Rocky Mountain College took the individual win, racing the 8k in 24:44.2, winning by over a second. The Nanooks were led by Nolan Earnest who took 36th-place overall, grabbing the Nanooks 23 team points. Following behind in 40th-place was freshman Josh Baurick. Baurick recorded a finishing time of 28:15.7 for 25 points. Ryan Owens followed two spots behind Baurick, joining his fellow freshman at the finish-line in 28:21.5 for a 42nd-place finish and 27 team points.Â
Koen Ross, Ben Pilon and Jack Cater rounded out the finishers for the Nanooks men's squad. Ross finished in 45th with a time of 28:52.5 for 30 team points. Pilon finished in 29:10.1 for 31 points and Cater finished in 30:04.6 for a 52nd-place finish.
Black Hills State took the win in the men's side, posting a team score of 26. South Dakota School of Mines took second with 56 points. MSUB (71) took third, Rocky Mountain (101) took fourth, the Nanooks (136) took fifth and Dawson CC took sixth (171). Montana State and Providence-Great Falls finished incomplete in the team standings.Â
The women's race followed at 11:30 a.m. AKT and Sydney Little Light from Rocky Mountain College won the 5k, beating Kendall Kramer of Alaska by six seconds. Little Light raced to a time of 16:58.1 while Kramer followed in second-place with a 17:04.7 in the 5k race. Just behind Kramer by only one second was teammate Naomi Bailey. Bailey tallied three team points with a time of 17:05.8. Only one player separated Bailey and the third Nanook finisher, Rosie Fordham. Fordham came in fifth-place, earning five points with a time of 17:34.2.
Delainey Zock and Abigail Haas rounded out the scoring for the Nanooks women's team as Zock took 27th-place with a time of 20:17.8 and Haas took 33rd-place with a time of 20:36.0, earning 29 team points. Teegan Silva was the final finisher for the Nanooks, finishing in 34th-place with a 5k time of 20:50.5.
Black Hills State took the first-place finish on the women's side, earning 49 points while Rocky Mountain College bested the 'Nooks by two points to take second. South Dakota School of Mines took fourth (77), MSUB took fifth (88), Providence-Great Falls (164) took sixth and Dawson CC and Montana State finished incomplete in the women's standings.Â
