FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks cross country running team had nine runners selected to the 2020-21 GNAC Cross Country Running All-Academic Team as five were selected for the women's team and four for the men's team.
On the men's team,
Christopher Kalev led off the list for the Nanooks as the geological engineering major has maintained a 3.32 GPA as he entered his sophomore season.
Jack Matherly was the next on the list for Alaska, as the junior posted a 3.36 GPA in sports management. Third was
Mike Ophoff, as the sophomore from Cista u Horek, Czech Republic maintained a 3.29 GPA in mechanical engineering. Finally,
Zephan Ozturgut, a junior from Anchorage, Alaska, maintained a 3.88 in biological studies.
For the women's team,
Rya Berrigan earned the first nod for Alaska, maintaining a 3.86 GPA for the Nanooks. She is from Palmer, Alaska and is studying biological sciences.
Hannah Deuling earned another academic award from the GNAC as she has maintained a 3.88 GPA. The senior from Whitehorse, Yukon is studying general sciences.
Anja Maijala, the next on the list, a senior from Wrenshall, Minn., has maintained a 3.69 GPA in wildlife biology and conservation.
Sarah Olson and
Catherine Reed-Metayer round out the list for Alaska. Olson, a sophomore from Blaine, Minn., has maintained a 3.44 GPA while studying business administration. Reed-Metayer, a junior from St. Ferrelo Les Neiges, Que., has maintained a 3.98 GPA while studying psychology.
