Grigals and @NanooksHockey Shuts Out Huntsville 3-0

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama – The Alaska Nanooks hockey team grabbed a shutout win against the Alabama Huntsville Chargers on Saturday, Feb. 8, 3-0. Gustavs Grigals led the charge for the 'Nooks, grabbing his second shutout of the 2019-20 season, helping improve the Nanooks to 14-13-3, 12-9-3-1 WCHA.

Kylar Hope broke the 0-0 tie early for the Nanooks while on the power play after the Jandric brothers found each other for the assists. Hope grabbed his fourth point of the weekend with his second goal, giving the 'Nooks their first lead of the weekend.

Other than the lone goal, the first period remained quite uneventful as two penalties were called, one on each team. Grigals stopped all seven shots put on net by the Chargers, holding them off the board for the first 20 minutes. Early into the second period, the Nanooks struck again, this time off the stick of Tyler Cline. In his second consecutive game, the senior-forward found the back of the again, putting the puck in the back of the net with a log-jam of players right in front of Mark Sinclair. The Jandric brothers connected again for two more assists on the play, extending the Nanook lead to 2-0.

After stopping 11 shots in the second period, Grigals took a shutout into the final 20 minutes, needing to stop the Chargers for his second shutout of the season. He did just that. The 'Nooks defense only allowed eight UAH shots on goal in the final period, playing the puck in a conservative manner. It was not until 19:57 into the third when the 'Nooks put one last shot on goal. From about 150-feet, Tristan Thompson took the puck and put the hail mary in the back of the net for the empty-netter, securing the win and shutout.

After earning a two-point tie the night before, the Nanooks leave Huntsville with a total of five points, going 1-0-1 on the weekend and maintaining sole-possession of fourth place in the WCHA standings.

Alaska returns home this next weekend on Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15 to face-off with Bowling Green.
