TACOMA, Wash. – Members from the Alaska Nanooks men's and women's cross country running teams participated in a track & field competition on Saturday, as the Nooks raced in the 5000-meter event at the JD Shotwell Invitational in Baker Stadium, hosted by the University of Puget Sound.
"This was a strong showing for the Alaska Nanooks cross country running teams and I'm glad to see that we can be competitive on the track, as well as on terrain," Alaska Nanooks cross country running spring training coach Susan Kramer said on Monday.
In the men's 5000-m, redshirt-freshman
Jack Matherly was the highest-ranking Nanook, placing fifth in the event with a time of 15:52.46. The Fairbanks native's time gave the Nanooks four points on the day.
Pacific Lutheran's Chris Nussbaum paced first in the men's race, posting a time of 15:18.98 for 10 points.
Following closely behind Mather's lead was senior
Daniel Serventi, who placed sixth with a time of 15:57.91 for three points, followed by junior
Jacob Walsh, who tallied a time of 16:11.81 for a seventh place finish and two points.
Also competing in the men's 5000-m were freshmen
Zephan Ozturgut (16:13.86) and Nathan Sanches (17:48.53).
In the women's 5000-m race, senior
Alex Bergholtz placed first overall with a time of 18:37.76 for 10 points. Bergholtz's first-place time was 41.85 ahead of the Pacific Lutheran's Joan Park, who crossed the finish line with a time of 19:19.61 to place second.
Freshman
Julia Murph was the only other Nanook to race in the women's 5000-m, earning a time of 20:%3.60 to place fifth for four points.
The Alaska Nanooks men's and women's cross country running teams will be hosting their annual Beach Bum 5km Run on Saturday, April 20 on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus. More information will be made available soon.
