FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks men's and women's basketball teams swept the GNAC weekly awards as Shadeed Shabazz and Jocelyn Gandara were named the GNAC men and women Players of the Week. The final award was claimed by the Nanooks men's basketball team, being named the GNAC Team of the Week after they knocked off the Western Oregon Wolves and Concordia Cavaliers, jumping out to a 2-0 start in GNAC play.

Shadeed Shabazz won his first award since joining the Nanooks in the GNAC this week after putting up 27 points in the Alaska win over Western Oregon. Alongside his 27 points, Shabazz collected four steals, assisted on three plays and grabbed two rebounds. In game two against Concordia, Shabazz put up the 15th game in GNAC-history of someone eclipsing 43 points. Shabazz grabbed another four steals in the win. He was not along this weekend in the win-category.

Jocelyn Gandara, a fellow transfer-junior, grabbed her first GNAC weekly award, being named the GNAC women's basketball Player of the Week. In game one, the newcomer put up 27 points and six rebounds, assisting on three plays and grabbing one steal. The Nanooks came back from down 14 in the fourth quarter to win that game 81-76 in OT. In game two, Gandara put up 34 points while shooting 10-22 from the field and 6-9 from three. She also grabbed eight rebounds and stole two balls.

The Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team grabbed the final award, being named the GNAC Team of the Week after they won their GNAC-openers against Western Oregon and Concordia. The 2-0 start puts the Nanooks at the top of the GNAC, tied with Simon Fraser, Alaska Anchorage, Seattle Pacific and Saint Martin's. The Nanooks will open 2020 on the road with Saint Martin's and Seattle Pacific, potentially setting themselves up for two meetings with fellow undefeated teams.
